Thirteen: Good Luck? Bad Luck? Who knows?

1. About an hour ago, I had to help a really stinky person. She smelled like cat pee. Ew. What is up with that? Don't people know? I mean, after a while, you start to smell yourself, don't you? Ugh. How do you even get to the point where you smell like that, anyway? Another example of my recent bad luck. I'm lucky I don't smell like that. I'd probably never get laid,

2. Today I tried out this stuff. It didn't work. I was kind of annoyed, considering it cost about $9. My hair isn't the least bit shinier than before. But I'm relieved it didn't alter my hair color. Good? Bad? Eh.

3. You can read all about my Valentine's Day celebration here. For some reason, our conversations were entirely inappropriate for dinner: diseases, guts, sex toys...but we had a good time. I made them CDs and MJ gave me some yummy lip balm and a super sweet card. KT paid for my food. I love my friends. Even when they are totally exhausted. :) Yay! I am lucky to have such super duper girls. But it's bad that we feel the need to talk about bestiality and flesh eating bacteria over dinner.

4. I paid my taxes today. Oh yes, the tax man cometh. I owed the Feds about $50, but am receiving a refund from the state for $171. Woo-hoo, right? Not exactly. It didn't cost me $110 to get my taxes done....so I pretty much broke even. Oh well. Next year I'll clean up. So much for paying off some credit card debt.

5. Last night, my "check engine" light came on. Fantastic. I took it in this morning. Something about the coolant/thermostat system. I don't know. He said it won't leave me stranded and should only cost about $100 to fix, so I can just get it looked at the next time I get my oil changed. Whew. Is this good? Is it bad? I don't know. Maybe it's neutral luck.

6. Anyone out there believe that good and bad things come in threes? Because I think I'm due for a "good" streak. I've paid my dues to the bad luck spirits, I think. For the time being, anyway. Maybe I need to wear my lucky purple shoes this weekend. If they don't work this time, I'm going to stop referring to them as lucky. Last time I wore them, they didn't work.

7. Speaking of luck, did I tell you I didn't buy the house next door to mine, only because the number 13 is in the address? Yeah. Its driveway is waaaaaaay better than mine. Ask me if I'm kicking myself for my absurd levels of superstition. But then again, I'm glad I have a lucky number (17) in my address. It's been a lucky number for my family for years. I'm just waiting for all that good luck to start happening...anytime, now, Lady Luck. Anytime.

8. The girls and I are planning on a weekend beach trip. Since Brunette and I always celebrate our birthdays together (I'm 4 days older than she), we decided this year we wanted to go somewhere. We decided to head to Myrtle Beach and stay in her family friend's house. We are staying there for free--woo-hoo!! We've decided to invite all our girlfriends, too, so it should be packed to the gills. Outlet malls, here we come! This one is definitely the good type of luck. Although, the best laid plans of mice and men....

9. I wish I was sick. I really do! I have tons of sick leave saved up. Just. Sitting. There. I'd love to have a movie day, cuddling with Sammy on the couch, dozing off when the soap operas come on and drinking hot cocoa....my coworker has the flu right now. Her doctor said she can't come back for a week. Some people have all the luck. Then again, I think she's probably barfing right now...

10. Maybe I missed my calling as a cooler. (Is this a good movie? Anyone know?)

11. I've always liked that saying, "The harder I work, the more luck I have." I think that in a lot of ways, it can be true. Do you think you can create your own luck? This guy says people who believe they are lucky are indeed luckier. So it seems you can create your own luck with positive thinking. Hmmm...time to think lucky.

12. On the highway near my house, there is no Exit 112. It goes from 111 to 113. This seems funny to me, as I would have voted to skip #113, rather than 112. I say, skip the unlucky numbers. Kind of like how there's never a 13th floor in a skyscraper. Maybe 112 is unlucky for the Department of Transportation?

13. Time to start surrounding myself with good luck charms (did you hear that bats flying over your head is a good thing?) and staying away from bad luck omens (no hats on the bed!!).

Although, I quite like the attitude of the farmer in this old Chinese fable. Who knows???

The Cooler IS a good movie, but definately not a feel-good one. Pretty somber, to say the least. But excellent acting, WHM is stellar.

The chinese fear the numbers 4 and 14. The only number superstition I have is over the triple six. My sister and I once rented a car with that in the license plate, and on our attempt to attend my mother's church service, THE CAR ENGINE WOULDN'T START. As if it KNEW we were trying to go to church.

No lie. freaky

Haha isn't The Cooler that movie where William H Macey goes around looking all sad? Oh yeah, that one.
I've seen it... strange but good.
Hey... you'd get to live in Vegas!

I like what you're saying about luck. They say that the more you smile, the more you feel like smiling.

3)I find sex toys are a totally appropriate conversation for dinner.

7)Italians are afraid of the number
17, because in old roman letters it's XVII, which they transform to VIXI, which in latin is "i have lived" (i.e. I'm gonna die).

12) This is absolutely true. I have a very good example of how this works among my girlfriends.

Take a mental health day instead of actually getting sick. This is some bad stuff, seriously. No snuggling on the couch with the dog - just a lot of praying to the porcelain god. Ugh!
I am definitely having some bad luck!

I had an Architect friend that loved gambling & Vegas. I told him he should design a Casino/Hotel that had a see-through/glass/unoccupied 13th floor.

Exit numbers correspond to the mile markers which begin at 0 at the western most or southern most points of the highway. If they ever build an exit at the 112 mile marker, that will be EXIT 112. KINGBOB

i wish i was sick too...you remember that scene from the devil wears prada?...i'm one stomach virus away from my goal weight!

and i wasn't going to try to be a "know it all" but kingbob beat me to it on the exit signs! that's also why sometimes you'll see exit 112, then sometimes 112A and 112B then on some random exits they have like 112ABCD, because they're all located on mile 112.

my car's been making noises too, and i am petrified to take it in, i just don't have that kind of money! yikes! i think i'll have my dad look at it! ugh, i know what he'll say though, i need to take it in a cough up probably $600, that's always what it is for me!

and last but not least, i got some serious dough back on taxes, sooooo excited! most years i get like $200 from federal and owe state something random like 74 cents. but this time, close to $1300 oh yea!!! perfect too, i need it for my bahamas trip!! so excited!!

have a fun weekend VB! i think i just left the longest comment ever!! :)

OMG..my dad told me that same fable about the farmer when I was a kid!! So brilliant.

As for the taxes, just be patient and all good things will come. I bought my apt in October 2005, and I was so irate b/c I owed the Feds a bunch of money when I did my taxes in 2006. But another friend who'd just bought said to hang in there, and in 2007 I'd see the benefit of that mortgage interest deduction.

Well, I just did my taxes last week, and I swear, I almost had a stroke when I saw my refund..it's basically enough to buy a new car straight up with cash.

The cooler is good but it skeeves me out because of a very graphic oral sex scene featuring William H. Macy down on Maria Bello. I love Bello, but if I never ever see William H. Macy with his face jammed up between a girl's thighs again I will be perfectly happy...

I don't know if other people just can't smell how bad they are or if they don't care.

Here's to staying healthy though. Sounds like once your coworker comes back you need to take a mental health day. :-)

Hey VB, I just thought of something PERFECT for you for your Violentines Day post. Take a look at this.

Well, DD took the 13th comment position. What does that say? I'm gonna even this out for you and leave you with a better # - 14 - on your comments.

I've heard that architects actually build-in a very small (unaccessible) 13th floor between the 12th and 14th floors so there isn't REALLY a mis-named 13th floor. You can't get to it, but it's there. I wonder what evil dust bunnies exist in those spaces, huh?!

when i worked at a library we had a patron called cockroach woman. she had cockroaches crawling out of her clothes. she was banned from the library until she had the board of health certify that her place was free of the cockroaches.

TGOV-- that is freaky!!!!and thanks for the movie review.

megan- thank you for the heads up about yellow. luckily, i don't like it all that much, so i only have a couple of shirts.

MJ-- i do think that's true about the smiling. if i force myself to smile, i can feel my mood improve, if only a little bit.

lenfer-- actually, so do i. i like talking about them...and it's a good thing I'm not Italian, because 17 is lucky for me and my family. yeesh. that's a good reason, though.

LB-- yeah, as soon as i heard about that, i thought, "ok, maybe i don't want to be sick..." Glad you're back, though--a week is a long time to be sick!

behind the curve-- that is a super cool idea!!!! i like that very much.

kingbob-- yeah, i've heard that, too, but the exits are too close to each other in this case....i will continue scratching my head.

sj-- exactly!!! one of the best things about breakups and illness! can you see me turning green over your trip and phatty tax refund???

teahouse-- holy cow!! and they say that there's no benefit to buying expensive NYC real estate. i bet if you moved down here, you could live in a mansion. no joke. we'd have to call robin leach! i am looking forward to next year, though, when i will finally get some moolah.

alejandra-- ew. thanks for the heads up. (get it?)

lisa-- yeah, i wonder the same thing.

dummy-- OMG that is awesome!!! thank you for sharing!!! i love it.

Mo-- thank you! i am glad you realized the unlucky amount of comments. i bet those dust bunnies are terrible.

M- ewwww about the cat pee lady. and ULTRA MEGA EW on cockroach lady. seriously, that is so effing disgusting i think i might barf. EW.
